Many people struggle to find inner peace because they cling to worldly obsessions. These obsessions can take different forms: an intense focus on a partner or ex-partner, greed for wealth or status, or vanity about one’s appearance and body. Even people with healthy habits can become obsessed with their health, making it harmful.
When we seek too much of something, it can turn into an obsession. As long as we are fixated on that “something,” we can never find true peace.
The reality is that the more obsessed we are with something, the harder it is to feel satisfied. For example, consider a friend who constantly talks about their ex. Despite feeling hatred, they can’t stop discussing them because their mind is obsessed. This is what it means to be a slave to your emotions.
Trying to suppress obsessive thoughts with therapy, medication, or willpower often doesn’t work. These thoughts don’t disappear; they’re just pushed away. Meditation offers a way to bring these thoughts to the surface and let them go completely. By freeing ourselves from obsessive thinking, we can achieve true inner peace.
Even if your friend knows their obsession is unhealthy and that they should move on, their mind is still trapped in the thought of “what if?”
I had my own obsessions, with recurring patterns of desire and worry. The best thing I did was try meditation. It helped me stop being a slave to my emotions and let go of my attachments. My anxiety about money and other concerns gradually disappeared, and I found a deep sense of calm.
Interestingly, once I let go of my obsession with money, I found it easier to achieve financial goals and other successes. Now is the time for both you and me to live free from obsession. We don’t need to let an obsessive mind hold us back. And if you have a friend struggling with this, encourage them to try meditation too!
