Building understanding and truly getting to know others can take time, but you have to be patient and keep an open heart.
I have two sons, both of whom are quite mischievous. They often have trouble in school and get into trouble with their pranks. My second son has an intellectual disability, which makes it difficult for him to connect with others.
Four years ago, both of my sons went to a student camp where they stayed with their teachers and peers for a week, much like a Boy Scouts camp.
I volunteered to join them at the camp because I was worried. I knew it might be hard for them to adjust to being away from home, surrounded by so many people, since they were used to getting all the love and attention from their parents.
Thankfully, my sons had caring teachers at the camp who looked after them.
When my older son had conflicts with his friends, his teacher helped him resolve them by talking things through.
When my younger son woke up crying, his teacher comforted him. I was so grateful to everyone for their kindness.
At first, I didn’t have a positive impression of the teachers at the camp.
I thought my older son’s teacher talked too much and was a bit nosy.
The teacher who took care of my younger son, although kind and warm like a mother, seemed short and much older than me, and I doubted whether she was the right person for the job.
However, after I started meditating, my feelings toward these teachers changed over time.
Last week, I happened to meet them in the neighborhood. The talkative teacher was still chatty, but her eyes were kind, and she genuinely cared about my son’s well-being. The shorter teacher immediately expressed how much she liked my younger son when she saw me.
That was when I realized that I wasn’t the only one who cared deeply about my sons. Many others genuinely cared too. Despite his challenges, my younger son is thriving in middle school and enjoying a full social life. My older son even thanked me for a delicious meal, showing that he is happy with his school life and friends.
I’m so thankful to everyone who has supported my family, especially those who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Thank you all.
